Love in Islam

No religion urges its followers to adopt mutual love, affection and intimacy like the religion of Islam. This should be the case at all times, not just on specific days. Islam encourages showing affection and love towards each other all the time. In a Hadeeth (narration), the Prophet,  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), said: "When a man loves his brother, he should tell him that he loves him." [Abu Daawood and At-Tirmithi]
In another Hadeeth, he said: "By Him in Whose Hand my soul is, you will not enter Paradise unless you believe, and you will not believe unlessyou love each other.Should I direct you to something that if you constantly did it, you wouldlove each other? Spread the greetings of peace among you."[Muslim]
Moreover, the Muslim's affection includes inanimate beings. Talking about the Mountain of Uhud, the Prophet,  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "This is Uhud, a mountain which loves us and we love it." [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]
Love in Islam is all-encompassing, comprehensive and sublime, rather than being restricted to one form only, which is love between a man and a woman. Rather, there are more comprehensive, wider and sublime meanings. There is love for Allaah The Almighty, the Messenger of Allaah,  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), the Companions  may Allaah be pleased with them and the love of good and righteous people. There is love of the religion of Islam, upholding it and making it victorious and the love of martyrdom for the sake of Allaah The Almighty as well as other forms of love. Consequently, it is wrong and dangerous to restrict the broad meaning of love to this type of love only.
A successful marital and family life is based on love and compassion:
Perhaps some people are influenced by what is relentlessly propagated by the media, movies and TV serials, day and night, thinking that a marriage will not be successful unless it is based on a pre-marital relationship between the young couple to achieve perfect harmony between them and secure a successful marital life.
Not only this, many people are also influenced by the call to intermixing between the two sexes, lewdness as well as many other moral deviations. This leads to great corruption and grave crimes as well as the violation of sanctities and honor. I will not refute this allegation from this point of view, but through real studies and figures.
In a study carried out by Cairo University (a university of neutral orientation; which is not an Islamic authority to be subject to doubt of being biased) about what it called “love marriage” and “traditional marriage”, the following was concluded:
According to the study, 88 percent of marriages which take place after a love affair end with failure, i.e., with a success rate of not more than 12 percent. As for what it called “the traditional marriage”, according to the study, 70 percent are successful.
In other words, the number of successful marriages in the so-called traditional marriage is six times more than love marriages. [Risaalah Ila Mu’minah]
This study is confirmed by another similar one carried out by Syracuse University in the U.S. The study indicates beyond doubt that love or passion is not a guarantee for a successful marriage; rather, it often leads to failure. The alarming rates of divorce assert these facts.
Commenting on this phenomenon, Professor Saul Gordon, a lecturer at the aforementioned University said, "When you are in love; to you the whole world revolves around this person whom you love. Marriage then comes to prove the opposite and destroy all your perceptions. This is because you discover that there are other worlds that you have to be aware of. It is not the world of humans, but the world of concepts, values and habits which you paid no attention to before." [Ibid]
Frederick Koenig, a professor of social psychology at Tulane University, says, "Romantic love is very strong and emotional, but does not last, while real love is linked to the land and life and can withstand trials." He adds,"It is impossible that one adapts the powerful emotions in romantic love. This love seems like a cake, a person enjoys eating it [while it lasts], then it is followed by the period of downfall. While real love means sharing the concerns of daily life and cooperation for it to continue. Within the framework of this cooperation, one can achieve his human need." [Al-Qabas Newspaper: Quoted from Risaalah Ila Hawwaa’]
The love which the writer talks about and calls “real life” was expressed in the Quran as affection. Allaah The Exalted Says (what means): {And of His Signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy.}[Quran 30: 21]
The relationship between spouses is based on affection and mercy, not on ardent love, desire and passion. It is a relationship which is based on quiet love (affection) and mutual mercy, not illusions of love which fail to withstand reality or romantic fantasies which fail to create a successful marriage.
How knowledgeable was ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattaab  may Allaah be pleased with him when he addressed women and said, "If one of you does not love her husband, she should not tell him about this, because only a few homes are based on love; rather, people live together by virtue of good morals and Islam."
Nevertheless, this does not mean that we call to neglect emotions between spouses or bury feelings and sentiments between them.
The Messenger of Allaah,  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), gave us the best example of loving his wives. It was narrated in the pure Sunnah (tradition) that the Prophet,  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), was careful to put his mouth on the same place from which his wife ‘Aa’ishah  may Allaah be pleased with her drank. During his final illness, he used her Siwaak (tooth stick) and died while he was reclined against her chest, between her neck and bosom. What kind of love is nobler and more sublime than this?

Portents of Good End

The Prophet informed us of some of the good end portents which if the person's death was with one of them then it will be a good omen and a glad tidings. Some of these portents are:

(1) -To utter the testification of faith [i.e. “La ilaha-illa Allah” - None has the right to be worshipped but Allah] at the time of death. Al-Hakim narrated that Mu`ath Ibn Jabal said: The Prophet said:
"He whose last words (in life) were ' La ilaha-illa Allah', None has the right to be worshipped but Allah shall enter Paradise” [Abu Dawud narration (3116), Al-Hakim (1/351) and regarded it authentic hadith and At-Thahabi agreed with him].

(2) - To die as a martyr while striving to Allah's word (i.e. Islamic Monotheism) superior. Allah said:
“Think not of those who are killed In the way of Allah as dead. Nay they are alive, with their Rabb and they have provision. They rejoice in what Allah has bestowed upon them of His Bounty, rejoicing for the sake of those who have not yet joined them, but are left behind [not yet martyred] that on them no fear shall come, nor shall they grieve. They rejoice in a Grace and a Bounty from Allah, and that Allah will not waste the reward of the believers”. [Quran 3:169- 171]

(3) - To die while preparing for a battle in Allah's Cause, or while performing Hajj (pilgrimage). The Prophet said:
"Whoever is killed in Allah's Cause he is (regarded as) a martyr (he will gain the reward of that of a martyr) and whoever dies in Allah's Cause, he is a martyr." Muslim and Ahmad narrated this hadith.
The Prophet said - about the man who was performing Hajj and fell down from his she-camel and died:
"Wash him with water and (the leaves of) the lotte tree, and shroud him with two sheets and do not cover his head for he will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection saying the "talbia " (devotional calls recited
when one performs Hajj or Umra; they are as follows: Labbaika Allahumma Labbaik..O Allah, here I am responding, here I am worshipping You).

(4) - To die exactly after performing an obedience to Allah (i.e. this obedience be the last thing one did). Abu Huthifa said that the Prophet said:
“He who says ‘La ilaha-illa Allah’ [i.e. no one has the right to be worshipped but Allah] seeking Allah's Countenance (and pleasure) and is the last thing he does (in his life) will enter Paradise. And he who fasts a day seeking Allah's Countenance (and pleasure) and happened to be the last day in his life, will enter Paradise. And he who gives money as a charity seeking Allah's Countenance (and pleasure) and this was his lost thing he did, will enter Paradise.” (Ahmad 5/391).

(5) - To die while striving to defend the five things that the Islamic law preserved (for Muslims, i.e. none should transgress to deprive a Muslim from them) and they are: religion, soul, wealth, honour and mind. Said Ibn Zaid narrated that the Prophet said:
“He who dies while defending his wealth (from the one who wants to take it away from him by force) is a martyr, he who dies while defending his household (from those who want to cause harm for them) is a martyr, he who dies while defending his religion (i.e. fighting the disbelieving transgressors) is a martyr, and he who dies while defending his soul (from the one who wants to kill him) is a martyr.” (At-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud)

(6) - To die because of one of the epidemic diseases. The Prophet informed us of some of them; they are:

A - Plague: Anas Ibn Malik narrated that the Prophet said:
“Plague is a cause of martyrdom for every Muslim (who
dies because of it).” [Abu Dawud (4772), and At-Tirmidhi no. (1418 and 1421)].

B - Tuberculosis: Rashid Ibn Hubaish said that the Prophet said:
“Dying during fighting in Allah's Cause is (the cause of) martyrdom, Plague is (a cause of) martyrdom (for every Muslim who dies because of it), dying because of delivery is (the cause of) martyrdom (for any Muslim woman) and tuberculosis is (the cause of) martyrdom (for a Muslim who dies because of it).” (Ahmad 3/289)

C - Abdominal diseases: Narrated Abu Hurairah that the Prophet said: “He (a Muslim) who dies because of an abdominal disease
is a martyr.” [Muslim no.1915]

D - Pleurisy: Jabir Ibn Atik narrated that the Prophet said:
“The one who dies because of pleurisy is a martyr.” (i.e. he will be given a reward equals to that of a fight martyr) This hadith will later be narrated fully.

(7) - The dying of a (Muslim) woman because of delivery or in her after-birth state: Ubadah Ibn As-Samit narrated that the Prophet said:
“And the woman who dies because of her son, after her delivery, her son will drag her with his umbilical cord to Paradise.” [Ahmad (4/201) and (5/323).

(8) - Dying because of drowning, being underneath debris, and bums: Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet said:
“Martyrs are (of) five (kinds): The one who dies because of plague, abdominal diseases, drowning, and the one who dies underneath debris.” [At-Tirmidhi (1063) and Muslim no. (1915) the like of it].
Jabir Ibn Atik said that the Prophet said:
“The martyrs other than being killed in Allah's Cause are, (of) seven (kinds): the one who dies because of plague is a martyr, the drowned (Muslim) is (regarded as) a martyr, the one who dies because of pleurisy is a martyr, the one who dies because of abdominal diseases
is a martyr, the one who dies because of burns is a martyr, the one who dies because of being underneath debris is a martyr, and the (Muslim) woman who dies because of delivery is a martyr.” This hadith was narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, An-Nisai, and Al-Hakim who classified it as an authentic hadith and Ath-Thahabi agreed with him.” [Ahmad (5/446), Abu Dawud (3111), An-Nisai (4/13-14) and Al-Hakim (1/352)].

(9) - To die on the Thursday night or on the daytime of Friday: Abdullah Ibn Amru said that the Prophet said:
“No Muslim dies on Friday or on the night of Thursday but Allah will deliver him from the trials of the grave.” [Ahmad (2/176) and At-Tirmidhi (1080) and he said “This is a strange hadith that has no connected chain of narrators”]

(10) - Sweat on the Forehead: Narrated Buraidah from Al-Husaib that he said: The Prophet said:
“A believer dies with sweat on his forehead.” [At-Tirmidhi no. (982), An-Nisai (4/6) and this hadith has a good chain of narrators]

Prepare!

Ibn Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them) said that a man from Ansar1 asked:

“O Messenger of Allah, who is the soundest of people and most generous (in manners)?" The Prophet said: “The soundest of people and most generous in manners is the one who makes mention of death very often and prepares himself fully for it; Verily, these are the ones who are the soundest of people. They gained the honour in this world and the glory in the Hereafter.”

[Ibn Majah no. 4259 with a weak chain of narrators. Ibn Abu Ad-Dunya also narrated it with a good chain of narrators; AI-Iraqi also narrated it in his book “Takhij Ahadith Al-lhya" (4/451)].

Signs of a good ending to ones life

All perfect praise is due to Allaah; I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and thatMuhammad is His Slave and Messenger;  may Allaah exalt his mention as well as his family and all his companions.
Fear of an evil end had broken the hearts of our righteous Salaf(predecessors)  may Allaah have mercy upon themSufyaan Ath-Thawri  may Allaah have mercy upon him cried one night until the morning, and when he was asked whether he cried due to his fear of his sins, he replied: “No, I am more scared of having an evil end”

Ibn Katheer,  may Allaah have mercy upon him said: “People who are righteous inwardly and outwardly and whose actions coincide with their words, Allaah willing, will not have an evil way to end their lives; and never was this reported about anyone before. It is only those who are evil inwardly and outwardly; those who are daring and indulge in major great sins and who are frequent in committing minor sins. This type of people, who are used to this practice will continue to do so until they die without repenting.”

The Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Verily, deeds are but by the way they end.” [Al-Bukhaari]. This is why our right predecessors  may Allaah have mercy upon them feared their ends because no one knows how he will end his life and in which state he will depart.

For this reason, Huthayfah,  may Allaah be pleased with him was happy to die before the trials about which the Prophet,  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), informed them and said: “All perfect praise be to Allaah who has hastened my death before these trials”.

One of the signs indicating that the person died whilst having a good end is dying whilst performing a righteous deed. Anas,  may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that he heard the Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) saying: “Do not be impressed with someone’s actions (thinking they are righteous) until you see how his end is, because one would be performing a (righteous) deed for a long period of his life, and should he die upon such a deed he would enter Paradise, but he switches to performing evil deeds (before his death). The slave would be performing a (bad) deed for a long period of his life, and should he die upon such a deed he would enter Hell, but he switches to performing good deeds (before his death) and when Allaah Wills good for a slave He uses him before his death” The companions  may Allaah be pleased with them asked: “O messenger of Allaah! How does Allaah use him?”  He,  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), responded: “He enables him to perform a good deed, then ends his life upon it.” [Ahmad]

Huthayfah,  may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Messenger of Allaah,  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “He who says; ‘Laa ilaaha illallaah’ (i.e., 'None is worthy of worship except Allaah') seeking the pleasure of Allaah, and it being his final statement, will enter Paradise; he who fasts sincerely, seeking the pleasure of Allaah, and died whilst in this state, will enter Paradise; he who spends in charity, sincerely seeking the pleasure of Allaah, and it being the last thing he did before dieing, will enter Paradise.”

Jaabir,  may Allaah be pleased with him reported: “I heard the Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) saying: “Every slave will be resurrected in the state upon which he died” [Muslim]. Imaam As-Suyooti resurrected in the state upon which he died” [Muslim]. Imaam As-Suyooti  may Allaah have mercy upon him said: “This narration refers to the state of obedience or disobedience”Maalik Ibn Deenaar  may Allaah have mercy upon him used to say: “If I can afford (physically) not to ever sleep I would not sleep” he was asked about the reason, to which he said: “I fear that the angel of death would come to me whilst I am sleeping and I would like that he comes whilst I am engaged in a righteous deed”.

An example highlighting one of the best ways to die is for a disbeliever to embrace Islaam then immediately die. Anas  may Allaah be pleased with him reported: “A young Jewish boy who was in the service of the Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) fell ill. The Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) went to visit him. He sat down by his head and said to him:“Embrace Islam.”The little boy looked at his father who was sitting beside him. He said: ‘Obey Abul-Qaasim (i.e., the Messenger of Allaah  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )).’ So he embraced Islam and the Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) stepped out saying:“Praise be to Allaah Who has saved him from Hell-fire.” [Al-Bukhaari].

Allaah guided a man from the Philippines to the light of Islaam on Wednesday in the city of Taa’if in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and he was taught some of the merits of Islaam and on Thursday he started reciting some chapters of the Qur’aan and on Friday morning he passed away, after only two days of him becoming a Muslim.

Uttering the testimonies of faith prior to death is a good deed and another example for one’s good end. Mu’aath ibn Jabal,  may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “He whose final words are: ‘Laa Ilaaha Illallaah’ (i.e., 'None is worthy of worship except Allaah') will enter Paradise.”[Al-Haakim].

‘Abdullaah Ibn ‘Amr Ibn Al-‘Aas,  may Allaah be pleased with him reported that when his father  may Allaah be pleased with himwas on his death bed he said: “O Allaah! You commanded me with many commands and I fell short in many of them. O Allaah! You forbade me from many matters, but I transgressed. O Allaah! None has the right to be worshipped but You” then he continued repeating this until he died  may Allaah be pleased with him.

Many of the Salaf  may Allaah have mercy upon them died whilst praying, which is another example for a good way to end life. ‘Abdullaah Ibn Abi As-Sarh  may Allaah be pleased with him supplicated one night after having performed Qiyaam saying: “O Allaah! Make my last deed in this life the performance of Fajr prayer” Then he performed ablution and prayed Fajr and died whilst concluding his prayer.

Abu Tha’labah  may Allaah be pleased with him used to say: “I hope that Allaah will not make me suffer upon death like I see some people do” Then he started performingQiyaam and died whilst in the position of prostration. That night his daughter saw in her dream that her father died, so she woke up terrified and went to her mother asking about her father, so she told her that he was praying Qiyaam. They went to check on him and found him in the position of prostration and when they moved him he fell to his side.

A young man prayed the Fajr prayer with the congregation and sat in the mosque reciting the Qur’aan and waiting for the sun to rise so that he may pray two Rak’ahs and he did not know that it was the last hour of his life, and died whilst in that state.
A fifty five year old lady was admitted into ER (the emergency room) as a result of getting a heart attack which made her heart stop beating completely. When the physicians were trying to make a heart massage with special equipment a very astonishing thing happened, which doctors had never seen before that day … the woman suddenly opened her eyes and spoke calmly saying a few words … she did not complain of any pain … she did not scream asking for their assistance … she did not ask for her husband or children … she simply uttered the two testimonies of faith … then the heart stopped again. She repeated this three times … then she died … and her face illuminated. When her husband was asked about the type of woman she was, he said: “I married her more than thirty five years ago, and since then I have never seen her abandon the Witr prayer (i.e. the odd-numbered Rak’ahs after the optional night prayer) unless she was sick or during her monthly period”.

Dying whilst fasting is yet another example exemplifying a good end, like in the case of Asmaa’ Bint Abu Bakr  may Allaah be pleased with her and her son ‘Urwah,  may Allaah be pleased with him.

Some people die whilst in the state of Ihraam which entitles the person to a great reward, as in the narration about the Companion who died as a result of his animal kicking him whilst in the state of Ihraam (for either Hajjor ‘Umrah), he  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Wash him with water and lote-tree (leaves), shroud him in his own garments and do not cover his head, because he will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection uttering the Talbiyah.”.

There are some people who die whilst reciting the Qur’aan, like in the case of ‘Uthmaan Ibn ‘Affaan¸ may Allaah be pleased with him who was known to be a person who continuously recited the Qur’aan day and night. He  may Allaah be pleased with him was martyred whilst reciting the Qur’aan in his house. Once Ibn ‘Abbaas,  may Allaah be pleased with him recited the saying of Allaah which means: “Is one who is devoutly obedient during periods of the night, prostrating and standing [in prayer], fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, [like one who does not]?”[Quran 39: 9] then he said: “I swear by Allaah! This applies to ‘Uthmaan Ibn ‘Affaan”.

One of the best examples indicating a good end is being martyred. Al-Miqdaam Ibn Ma’di Karib,  may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “A martyr has six bounties: He will be forgiven with the first drop of his blood that is spilt; He will see his place in Paradise (at the time of death); He will be saved from the ‘Great Horror’ (on the Day of Judgment): A Crown of Dignity will be placed on his head, which contains many corundum, each one being more precious than this life and all that it contains; He will have seventy two Women of Paradise; And, he will be allowed to intercede for seventy of his family members (who would have otherwise gone to hell).”[At-Tirmithi].

Shaddaad Ibn Al-Haad,  may Allaah be pleased with him narrated: “A Bedouin came to the Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )accepted Islaam and said: ‘I wish to migrate (to Madeenah)’. So the Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) asked some of his companions to take care of him. Then after a battle, the Muslims had gained some booty so the Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) divided it and gave the Bedouin’s share to some of his companions to look after, as the Bedouin was still at the rearguard. When the Bedouin returned, they gave him his share, so he asked them: ‘What is this?’ they replied: ‘It is your share from the booty which the Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) gave us to hold on to for you.’ So the Bedouin took the booty and went to the Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and asked: ‘What is this?’ The Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) replied: “Your share of the booty.”The Bedouin said: ‘This is not why I believe in you and follow you; rather, I follow you so that I can get shot by an arrow right here, (and then he pointed to his throat) then die and enter Paradise.’ The Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )said: “If you are sincere then Allaah will grant you your wish.”After a short while, fighting resumed and the Bedouin’s body was brought to the Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) with an arrow in his throat at exactly the spot where he had pointed to the Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ).Thereupon The Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “He was sincere so Allaah granted him his wish.”Then using his own garment, the Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) shrouded the Bedouin, prayed the funeral prayer over him and was heard by his companions to say during the prayer: “O Allaah! This is Your slave who migrated for Your sake and was killed as a martyr – and I testify to this”.Which testimony could ever be more honorable, sincere and truthful than this great one given by the Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )?

A truck driver by the name of Abu Dujaanah, was known in his town to be an evil person who consumed intoxicants. One day, he got in a deadly car accident, but Allaah rescued him from death. Allaah decreed that two righteous young men see the accident and rush to him whilst he was unconscious and took him with them and when he woke up they told him to perform Ghusl (ritual bath) which he did, then they instructed him to pray, and after he prayed they said to him: “Allaah Has rescued you from death and had you died upon the state you were in, it would have been the worse way to die and be resurrected. You should repent to Allaah and shun all sins” their words affected him deeply, and he shunned his evil company with whom he used to hang around, and started practicing. A few months later, he traveled to Bosnia for Jihaad, and Allaah granted him martyrdom there. His body remained with the enemies thrown in an open field for two and a half months after he was killed, and then a swap of dead bodies happened between the Mujaahideen and the Serbs, and when the brothers opened the plastic bag in which he was kept for this long period, they saw his face smiling and an extremely pleasant scent emanating from his body.

These were but some examples of how a good end may be, and we ask Allaah to bless us and grant us a good way to end our lives.
